You can get incredibly accurate energy expenditure from a chest strap HRM, but Strava and Map My Ride do not do it. High end systems use HRV, not pulse rate; you can work out where your LT threshold is by the timing variability because it changes based on how active your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are. Again, this is not what most smart phone apps are doing.
