If you ride for a sponsored team I was under the impression that your bikes are given to you as part of the agreement. If that is the case are you simply allowed to gift them to friends at your own discretion?
Seems odd to me.
Makes no difference in this case but I am curious.
Depends on the team. I have a couple of female cross/road pro friends and they hardly get any more support than your average amateur shop team. One of them rides for Pepper Palace and they had to get a ton of crowd-sourced online funding just to be able to afford to race in the TTT at Worlds here in Richmond.

They've paid for their team bikes (at a discount, but still paying for them) and they own the bikes so when they get a new bike the old ones either get relegated to winter training or sold for cheap/given away.

Edited to add: I'm definitely not trying to say her story is plausible in any way, just that female pros often have to pay for the bikes they race on.
