I guess he pulled out to his right to pass someone who was turning left. As he pulled around the stopped, left-turner--I was right there.

I do recall a very close pass right after that, but from a car not matching his.
I would have said "why, were you not paying attention to what's in front of you?" People sometimes say things like "I 'almost' hit you!!" when really they weren't even close. They just want to express their disdain for cyclists legally and safely using the roadway.
