Right now I'm using Kenda Kozmik Lite tires in 29x2.0, and they are much better all around. They roll better on pavement, float over gravel well, handle singletrack like a champ, and last a lot longer. I've gotten 2,000 miles and I wouldn't be surprised if I get another 2,000.

If they made the Kozmik in a 45c, they'd be the perfect gravel tire.
Were you running S-Works Renegades or Control? The S-Works are really a race day tire. They are a bit lighter, but wear quicker and are more subject to sidewall damage. Control is definitely the better choice for gravel.

BTW, I'd never rotate a used rear tire to the front. Maybe wear out the rear, move the front to the rear and install a new front.
