I confess I'm at a loss to understand how the $50 Nashbar mountain bike triple (44/32/22) I have on my touring bike is in any way insufficient or lacking....

Must be something I'm unaware of, when I spin the pedals the crankset seems to work just fine. Yet some intelligent and knowledgeable people obviously spend serious coin on these things.
