I too have size 48's. I use Pearl Izumi soft shell shoe covers. They fasten with Velcro so they are easier to fasten than with a zipper. They are pretty warm and durable. I hated dealing with squeezing into covers with a zipper just never seemed to be enough room for my monster feet.

BTW I have them in XXL
