That's an interesting point. Usually when you talk about hot collectibles, they are worth much more than their original value - quite often to a ridiculous amount. Other than a few odd balls, that's not true of bikes.
If you had bought a late 70s or early 80s Colnago etc., kitted it out with Nuovo Record, stored it away and now sold it, you probably wouldn't get what you paid for it. Not even thinking about inflation.
Although I guess that doesn't affect that some bikes are still more collectible than others.
