I found that article interesting.

There is an street entering downtown Tampa that has a similar setup as this incident. It has further hazards of visual obstacles, more lanes, an immediate stop light and many people wanting to go from the far right to the far left. I always approach it knowing I may have to stop even though I have the ROW. In relation to that article, when I've looked into the eyes of the drivers I can tell I'm in their field of vision, but they are not seeing me. They are focused down the road for cars as they merge.
