[not a DI2 user] I thought users have reported (and perhaps Shimano designed it this way) that the FD will stop working long before the RD, either due to its higher power draw (which a drained battery is unable to supply) or due to programming that recognizes a low battery and shuts it down to conserve power for the RD.
