I agree 100% with this! It used to be that if you were a bit "edgy" you'd have a tattoo. Now so many have them, and given I have none, I feel almost "counter culture".
Sorry but popularity and public perception are personal hangups and not real 'coolness' barometers.
Tatoos are just as cool or uncool as ever.
Just like everything else, it's how legit you are. Not the item.
That's like saying mountain biking used to be edgy but not anymore...
