I ride solo for the simple reason that I couldn't stand to be around anybody who'd want me as company.
Actually, I used to ride with clubs many decades back, but things were different than now. A club ride was only a group ride in the sense that we were on the same road, the same day. The ride would quickly break down into small groups of 2-4 riders, who might stay together or drift off to join other riders as they went down the road. Other than the club rides, I rode with one or two people from a small circle of regular buddies.
These days, my old riding buddies are all moved on, and I've never found anybody to replace them, so I ride solo. I might chat with someone I pass along the road, but it's only for the short while it works out.
BTW- when I say solo, I mean solo, no radio, cell phone or any other distractions, just me and the birds.
