What kind of load do you need to carry if you're not spending the night anywhere?

Seems like everybody should have two water bottle cages and a supply of snacks. Plus a tool kit. Make everyone carry their own water, and the rest could be carried just about any way you want. If you really don't have plans to do more than that, I might look into an easy-on/easy-off handlebar bag, or even a Wald front basket. While I would not want to run my bike without a rear rack, that's because I carry a lot of junk on an almost daily basis. If all I wanted to do was carry some snacks around for a day, I think a rack and bag might be overkill.

But if you think you have a rack's worth of gear to carry, I'm a fan of Topeak racks and bags. They are pricier than what you're looking at, but they can be found for under $50 (each part) if you look around, which is a lot cheaper than some heavy duty touring racks.

That's not to say that the models you linked to wouldn't work. I've never tried them.
