For long day rides, I think the rear rack trunk type bags are a great solution. I like my Topeak rack with Topeak rack trunk combination. The mounting system is solid and some of the rack trunks have panniers that expand out when you need them. Those panniers are probably not suitable for overnight rides but to carry extra clothes and gear on day ride they work fine.
