I have refurbished and sold a handful of World Sports with a few being 88-90. They are well made basic bikes and at that point they were decently spec'd(compared to earlier years). The brake levers on ones I fixed up were low end Chen Shing(sp?) and those could easily be replaced for $25 with some Tektro Aero levers.
Not quite sure what a WSD bike is, but she has a flat bar Specialized hybrid thing right now, that whole riding style is going to have to be learned for her. She is insistent that she has her own road bike, so the best I can do is get her one ASAP and get her riding on it. I'm glad to hear about the bike quality in general, there are a few of the 1984+ chromoly framed ones on my CL regularly, and really the only thing I've seen that small in the past few weeks of watching.

Good to know. I punched some random routes into Google bike maps, I'm sad to say (or maybe incredibly happy?) that the elevation changes over much of the country is even less than my 15 mile after work bar rides

I don't think we'll make it Maastricht way, but nothing is set in stone yet. Planning on arriving in Amsterdam on a Friday, and we have til the second Sunday to go where ever and get back in time to fly out.
