Have you ever had a steel frame bicycle break? Have you ever had it repaired? I have done both...several times. I would argue that people who buy steel don't know any better or, at least, they are uninformed. They've been told that steel frames can be simply repair by anyone anywhere. Most people just don't understand that it isn't such a simple repair.
I have ridden steel bikes all my life and don't think welding them is trivial - so am I an anomaly or is your perception of "people" skewed.
