Thanks, everyone. The Shimano UN-55 seems to be a reliable, inexpensive BB that is suitable for touring.

So the question then becomes - assuming I DO want to upgrade my cranks what are some good, square-taper cranksets? Right now I've got the old Shimano Deore LX triple crank on there. 50/40/26t.
