As well and with no auto road, I'm wondering what the course would be. In theory, all hiking trails off the auto road are in federal wilderness area where bikes are prohibited.
From other sources I've seen, Tim also had support from a video crew on a snowmobile. They were surprised when the weather observatory folks told them that they equip their snowmobile with studs - something the film crew had not, to help prevent getting blown off the mountain. Tim had studded tires but still had major traction issues which was a reason for not riding down.
Personally and while I otherwise respect Tim and his cycling accomplishments, I felt this was a stunt. And God help anyone who tries this with no support on a day the weather suddenly turns dangerous, which happens in a heartbeat on this mountain. The search and rescue folks will be pissed at having to find a body that's been blown down into the Great Gulf.
