There is no right or wrong way.
There is simply right for you.
All methods have pro's and cons and compromises.

Trailers - two wheels fine for tarmac but much less so for off road.
single wheel fine for both though less (enough?) haulage space.

Don't underestimate the effect of a headwind on your mileage/effort.
