You're sort of not on the crack...

The braze on for the symmetric shifter was a mount on the top of the down tube that the sort of square housing mounted to. Which made it difficult to use non-symmetric shifters. There was a cable stop made for those braze ons- and they're rarer than hen's fangs and cost an outrageous pretty penny when you do find them.
