Quill Stem Dilemma- but I dodged the bullet!

One of my winter project has been converting my '83 Schwinn Super le Tour to a 650b. I refinished the frame. And built new wheels last weekend along with mounting the tires. Yesterday I picked up a Moustache Bar from a fellow and came home to swork on it a bit before going to my PT fun job at the LBS.
Well I found out that all steerer tubes are not the same ID! The Schwinn use a quill stem with 21.1mm dia. The few I had were the wrong size, too big, and the original that had drops was too long. So glad I work at the LBS because we have lots of old parts in the basement and I went down with the calipers and found 2 short 60mm stems. This AM I used some Mothers Polish? and cleaned them up. Look almost brand new. Would like a taller stem but not sure that is availble.

Since the shop is closed on Sunday I will go in and cable the bike and have it ready to ride except for the bar tape.
