If you really want to keep this pile of nostalgia, I would suggest turning it into a single-speed beater, with sawed-off bars (flipped over-looks just like bull-horn bars), and only the small chainring, with no derailleurs at all. You would end up spending only the cost of a single-speed freewheel, and the cost of wrenches and tools needed to modify it. It would be "cheap chic", and would be useful around town.
I have not checked the chain stretch yet, I'll do that tomorrow. As for the Silk Purse thing, I'm not fixing it up for any sort of resale value or to show off all my fancy parts and such. Just minor upgrades/repairs to get it running.
The last part may be a good idea though. Any suggested parts for it?
