Miyata Handlebar Stem

So, I finally took a 1982 (I believe) Miyata 610 I bought a few weeks ago on a test ride, just to make everything was kosher before it got sent to the powder coater. The bike ran wonderfully, with one exception: the handlebar stem is far shorter than anything else I own, even extended up to the safety line, and I don't particularly care for it. Even with the seat practically sitting on the top bar, the handlebars still barely rise to the same height, and I (well, my beer belly) just don't care to be that hunched over for long periods of time.

I've tried digging around a bit, and I can't seem to find a direct answer to what I consider to be an easy question: are the diameters on all road bar handlebar stems the same? Also, since I've got your attention, do you have any recommendations for a decently priced aftermarket option? I'd prefer to stick with a vintage looking metal one, unless there is a benefit from going newer.

Finally: how the heck do you get the pedals with the old fashion clips to stay upright as you stick your feet in??? I suddenly understand why everyone loves their feet attached to pedals, though!
