My take is, if he tries the ride cold, with zero training, he'll only make it about 1/2 way. If he actually trains for it for as little as a a month, riding every other day and building up to a few hours of riding a day at the end, he should be able to do it because it's relatively flat.

He could certainly get it done if he trains to do it. With little to no training, highly doubtful. So I agree, it comes down to his attitude toward the task at hand.
