... because I've learnt from Bike Forums that 1x11 drivetrains, with their hideous two-tooth gaps, destroy your cadence and efficiency etc. etc. and are therefore totally unsuitable for road cycling. So, I conclude that it would be unpossible for the OP's boss to complete this ride if they rig the bike he's going to use.
