If you collide head on with a car or truck going 70 mph, you are probably toast. But most bike accidents are slower speed incidents. And at slower speeds, wearing a helmet can mean the difference between walking away from an accident and a trip to the hospital, or alternately, a mild concussion versus a permanent brain injury.
Quite a lot of truth there. Don't know, though, if it's a matter of know more now as opposed to back then just didn't really think it through. Modified racing and motorcycle riding going back into the '70s is something I'd never considered doing without wearing a helmet. But my first ever use of a helmet on a bicycle dates to 1995. I guess we always just considered cycling a harmless, low speed activity.
