We didn't have the Internet.... but we did have newspapers, magazines, libraries... even color TV. And industries all practiced well established record keeping. Regional differences weren't much different back then then they are today.

Yes. And unless you were riding a custom frame, the "standardized" top tube and geometry. Which is why a taller person was usually seen riding a "10 speed" sitting upright hands on either side of the stem. The bike did not fit.
