Whereas I don't think the shoulders width advice is long held.... I do believe it is good advice... or a decent starting point if you don't know what your comfort range is. I just returned from the garage to check. And my 42cm bars... place the hoods snuggly into my armpits (shoulder width).

Lets make this question even simpler. Ten Men walk into a shoe store (a cycling shoe store). Each and every man has the exact length and width foot as measured by the Brannock Device.

That's the foot measuring thingy.

They all came in to buy the same shoe that was advertised on sale. So do they all find the same shoe, in the same size, comfortable? No. They don't. But most (6-8) of them do.
