It is hard to imagine what they were thinking, putting alloy shell hubs on Schwinn bikes, but I've seen a 1954 Schwinn that had a grand total of ONE aluminum component: the hub shell. That little bit of aluminum presumably reduced the weight of the bike from 42 lbs 8 oz to 42 lbs 2 oz.
