If you have delicate computer programmer hands you can wear gloves or twist the spokes about each other at their outer crossing using something softer like an old left crank, plastic screw driver handle, or brass drift.
I do now-a-days, but come from a machinist, mechanic background, so still get my hands dirty working on the house, car, bikes ...
