It is quite easy to go on with the flow of the status quo and accept the life as the majority now live it without the need to support the life as the minority perceives it. As far as the carbon footprint goes we, not you and I maybe, buy others have taken the various calculators of carbon footprints and compared results. I know from the results where I stand compared to some professing car freedom. One that flies more often than I, because I don't fly at all, has a much higher footprint than I. The excuse is they have limited time. That is fine with me but it indicates they aren't willing to do everything to preserve the environment, only the things they think should be done. Once again self interest. I hear the mantra of Hidden costs from people posting on the internet with computers shipped to the US by cargo ship, tisk, tisk, if you look up what that does to the environment.

No as we debate and decide where to place our vote or our support the common citizen just may have the right idea. That common citizen doesn't care if people use the bus or ride bicycles or fly in planes or gets their computers and fresh fruit from giant cargo ships. They only care about getting to work and providing for their family.
If you want to just live your life without concern for the impact of cars then be my guest. You have lots of people to hang out with

In truth as you have said about the economy of scale there is another truth, strength in numbers, and I need not convince a LCFer that they need to change. They are trying to change the tide of technology by going back to a simpler time. I only need to fade into the comfort of what most of us do and live a life that is easier to do and one I can enjoy. For more than 45 years I have listen to the wishful thinking of those that want to return to an almost pre industrial lifestyle only to watch them fail at convincing any great number when the next economic boom hits. I have heard the "if we just did this" everyone would be happier and healthier most of my life only to watch it fade as the next, "if we only did this", comes into view.
Please stop projecting yourself into the head of an LCFer and feel like you can generalize about us. You're not any good at it Stick to your own thoughts and wishes for our society
