I have a couple of the La Jolla cruisers myself. The chain issue has nothing to do with the brand of bike - it probably just needed to be adjusted.
As far as cruisers go, I think the La Jollas are great - light aluminum frame, 3 piece BSA compatible crank, standard 27.2 mm seatpost diaameter. The seat doesn't go very high, but because of the standard seatpost diameter, it is easy enough to buy a longer post.
