My setup is admittedly a hodge-podge-- Shimano CX50 cranks with Praxis 48/36 rings, Crank Brothers Iodine 3 wheel with Shimano XT-M771 11-32 cassette, but all operated by road stuff, Ultegra 6700 FD/RD, and 5700 105 levers. MY BB is good old BSA, 68mm, with a 0.5mm spacer on the drive side. Dunno if it makes a difference, but I also have a relatively long chainstay, 430mm. I can run in any gear combo without rubbing, so long as the trims on the FD are good. Small/small is a never-used combo, but it will get some noisiness if I try it, sounds like the chain clicking against the 12T. No chain rub against the big ring in the front though. In the small ring, untrimmed, the chain rubs the FD starting with the 14T, but the first trim position quiets it. I experience no rubbing of the FD in the big ring, even in big/big.
No problems with back-pedaling or spinning the cranks backward. But like I said, my setup is kinda half road and half MTB-- I know the CX50 is listed as a 43.5mm chainline, and I presume the Iodines are typical 44-45mm MTB, so with my 0.5mm spacer up front, I guess that would explain my relatively smooth operation. I have noticed that compared to other bikes, my drivetrain is much smoother spinning when turned manually in reverse. Some road bikes feel downright stiff. I have no idea what that means, if anything.
