There are a ton of good brand names, most of which use the same list of sram or shimano components..

Giant, Specialized, Felt, Trek, Yeti, Rocky Mountain, GT, Santa Cruz, Kona, Scott are just a few..

I personally think you get a little better bang for the buck with Giant, but they all have good starter bikes in that range. Finding the best shop is probably more important than the brand.
