There is some sort of hubris infecting a lot of management teams (not just cycling computer ones) that makes them believe people will change from using a site or service that is the clear leader-in-the-clubhouse over to a proprietary one (with worse quality and restrictions). Other examples are the Sony music player (whose name I forget) that changed all your mp3s to their proprietary format... and deleted the source files (also, their MemoryStick). The iPod didn't take off until Apple got over its FireWire fetish. Adidas's first GPS watch was locked into their proprietary portal as well. There are tons of other examples I can't remember off the top of my head.
