Usually, it is when we are fatigued, distracted, ill or injured that we make motor skill mistakes like this.
Yup. Both of my minor falls in March -- in the same area, no less -- were toward the end of a long day of riding. It was a combination of misjudgments, but being tired was a factor.

Usually I prefer to ride city streets because the routes are more direct. But on days when I'm tired or my legs feel too mushy for sprints, I've been taking the longer route via the MUP.

But the MUP isn't necessarily safer. There have been several occasions after a 20-30 mile ride when I felt too exhausted to hold a steady line against the cross wind -- not wobbling around like a toddler, just not locked into a railroad line. Meanwhile, the oncoming lycra clad road racers in mini-peletons are taking up 2/3 of the narrow paved path, leaving zero room for error. So I'll ride the adjacent gravel path, which is much wider, used mostly by walkers and joggers. There the main challenge is watching for washboard ruts and occasional deeper patches of sand and gravel. But at least a fall is less likely to involve a head-on collision with speed racer at a combined 35 mph impact.
