That makes sense. I must have seen them at Interbike in the fall of 1992, where they would have debuted the 1993 products.

It took a bit of digging, but I found the road SPD pedals that preceded it, the PD-A525. My memory is apparently at least sort of right. They came out a year ahead. You are correct of course that these weren't the Dura Ace SPD's, but a cheaper pedal intended to test the waters.
