Yes, well said. But on those rare occasions when someone notices the old bike I'm riding, and asks if it's all original, being able to say "yes it is!" is a lot of fun. About a year ago I did a 300 km brevet on my ca 1960 Allegro, which is very close to original (no tubular tires; a couple other parts switched out with approx. correct replacements; new home-made saddle). The comments I received were not, for the most part, about the bike; they were about the fact that I was riding such an cool old bike, and this seemed to make some people a bit jealous. Several other riders said something to the effect "I still have the bike I raced in college. I've been thinking about riding it again, but it needs new tubular tires...".
