This is a dead-end road and the cars are backed into their spaces so all the car has to do is pull head-out. I was riding about 3-4 feet in front of the cars and I had to swerve to avoid getting hit but thankfully the driver hit their brakes. I was just thinking about the guy to my left riding in the middle of the road and now I know why. Even with my headlight and light-colored jacket, the driver either didn't look to his left or saw me and it didn't register. I'm not sweating this - just a lesson learned.
Driveways are the worst. People backing out are looking for cars. Bikes just do not register. I think it's because they are looking further down the road---anticipating car speeds---and bikes are just too close.
