The problem with human society is humans. There will always be a wide range of capacities and behaviors. This is not new or unique. But despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth in every generation, human society does move ever forward. And in the course of that progress it seems fairly evident that large human society is most successful when the greatest number of people are drawn into some level of participation in that society. Social institutions, such as schools, are a part of that. Even those that 'fail' at their ostensible mission are often serving a significant societal purpose. If you look at societies without those institutions, it does not to me present a desirable alternative.
