Yes to both and don't use GU. Sheesh. I know the cap doesn't really do much, but I hit enough mud on enough of my bikes that I feel better having it there.
I actually ruined a tube once by pushing too hard with the pump head (no lock nut). It was probably an old tube, but still, I see some value in stabilizing the stem when I'm hammering away with the little old minipump.
