I just picked up a pair of Tevas for bike touring. So far, I have about 10 very technical mountain bike rides with Tevas and flat pedals, and I'm loving them. Stability is great and the sole is stiff enough for efficient pedaling, and when my fatbike tires started floating during a deep stream crossing, it was great being able to plant a foot down in 10 inches of water without suffering for the next hour.
I have been wearing them with wool socks. I find I really love the temperature regulation of wool, and these sandals make a lot of sense with them.
Here's what Rivendell says about Tevas for bike touring:
"There are lots of good cycling shoes that aren't made for cycling. Teva Hurricane sandals are excellent. They're light, stiff enough, and cost just $39. You can wear them sockless in the summer, or with double-thick socks in the winter. I'm sure there's somebody out there who knows somebody who knows somebody who heard from somebody about a guy who crashed while wearing sandals and hurt his foot because of it; but that's pretty hard to do..."
FWIW, I have not hurt my foot... yet.
I'm going to Iceland in July. These will be my touring shoes. I have a pair of gore-tex socks that I plan to use for warmth when it's raining (most of the time, it's raining in Iceland). Good stuff!
