IMHO hiking type sandals do not work properly without socks. May as well wear flip flops - just about.

AFA stream crossing, wool socks stay pretty warm when they are wet. I've spent near all day hiking through streams wearing Keen sandals and wool socks.
Add the chicago suburbs and mississippi to the list along with Iowa.
Or whats probably more accurate is its mostly an age thing and there are outliers.

Socks with sandals is like a jacket over a tank top.

I don't doubt wool socks staybrelatively warm when wet, just wet and squishy. I have wool socks and they dont bead off water when wet, they absorb and hold water for a period of time. Just seems squishy.
