I'd think cycling to the moon would be even more overwhelming... than by spacecraft. My thought would be every job has it's own correct tool. I think the point some are trying to make is that it isn't a limitation, or self-denial, it's a choice. As previously discussed, most car-free folk are not die-hard anti-car types - they just prefer to minimize their car use. Sure, if they want to see Yellowstone, they might rent a car, but the rest of the time, they are happy to carry out local chores and see local sights or visit local attractions by bike rather than car.
