I wish there was a way for it not to run in the back ground, but someone at Garmin must have thought who wouldn't want this. the problem i have with it is the speeds either to fast uphill or to slow for down hill and flats. it might be useful for very flat rides . I believe its more intended for structured workouts or for timing a route. For example, you might setup a 30 minute loop, then set the virtual partner to 18mph. It will travel at that standard rate along the course route until completed. It's functionality is kind of loss when you're not doing that.
That said, there are several pages that you can hide/unhide - hiding a page pretty much turns off the page until it is unhidden.
