I commuted daily for 5+ years with a road bike in dry conditions and I didn't come anywhere close to wearing out the rims.

Rim brake performance was excellent (dual pivots).

People who have both rim brakes with alu rims report their hydraulics do not offer shorter stopping distances in dry conditions.
