The only silly arguments are those taken personally.
The point of argument isn't to "win" or "lose" it. It's a means to find out what others think, why they think it, and how they came to think what they think. I find them fascinating. Hell ... if you actually listen to what others are saying, you might even actually learn something.
As for the subject matter, Parkinson's Law of Triviality applies: The time spent discussing an issue is inversely proportional to it's importance.
