My 29er's evolution continually converges closer to a city bike, but it is not, nor could it ever be, a "proper" utility bike. I can get it close enough to be useful, but it will never be able to compete in that area with bikes that were designed for utility use right from the start.
I appreciate your perspective, even if it differs from mine. I tend to think of classifications like "city" or "utility" on a sliding scale, not as some sort of absolute. I also don't care what anything was designed for. Just as you talk about using a utility vehicle for recreational purposes (the AM General HMMWV or the Hagglunds BV206 for instance), folks use recreational bikes for utility purposes, both within reason.
