You could catch the Rose Canyon bike path at the northeast corner of Mission Bay and ride up to UC San Diego (my "home away from home" in my encore career). We have an on-campus bike shop "where cycling is academic," and many of the students ride older bikes (as do I). USD and SDSU are even closer to where you are staying.
