I use a similar old 10 speed for kid-hauling - now half-wheels. Can you post the original bike? I'd be surprised about the bike being white metal. It may be the attachment for the seat you'd like to use is inappropriate.
If you're already comfortable with drop bars you'd probably be fine, top bar brake levers would be better, as you likely will have more dificulty leaning down to the drops. I might suggest a kid trailer or half-wheel (co-pilot, trail-a-bike, picolo/kazoo, etc) if your kid is old enough (wee-ride make both types if you're attached to the brand - I assumed you meant the wee-ride kangaroo centre mount carrier)
