fiets, yes that is exactly what bugged me.
I am doing a test, I have wrapped sections of old tubes around the bars right at that clamp area that is raised up, so that there is no difference between the end of the ergo grip and the actual bar. At some point I am going to replace the tape on my drop bar bike so plan to use the old black tape and wrap that over the wrapped tubing, and this will hopefully bring the level up to the "clamp" area of the grip.
If it doesnt work out, I'll just take the grips off and double wrap the bars.
I have also thought of putting some tough hockey tape or something on the "sides" of the bars, where they will come into contact with the ground when laying the bike on its side, so that the bar tape doesnt get ripped (or when leaning bike against a rough wall or whatever)
